The online operations at BJís, Costco, PriceSmart and Samís Club continue to provide suppliers with a significant opportunity to grow their club business. This is due to three reasons: the majority of online merchandise is not stocked in the club locations, club buyers are constantly rotating unique online-only items through their web sites and online sales volume continues to grow.
Regarding that sales volume, while BJís and Samís Club do not publicly share web site sales data, Costcoís online success provides an indication of the overall sales opportunity. In its 2018 fourth quarter and fiscal year conference call with financial analysts, Costco stated its worldwide online business represents approximately 4% of its worldwide merchandise sales or approximately $5.5 billion. To put this into perspective, Costcoís online business represents approximately 32 club locations.
